Walking & Cycling around Dorset

Walking in Dorset

Dorset has a large number of walking trails along its 3000 miles of rights of way making it a favourite destination for ramblers.  The local council have improved the network over recent years and as such thousands of new signposts have been erected and many paths cleared.  There are walks for everyone including the South West Coast Path which stretches 73 miles from Lyme Regis to Poole Harbour (www.swcp.org.uk).  Along the South West Coast path you will encounter Golden Cap, which at 626 feet is the highest point on the south coast and provides views for many miles along the stunning coastline.  Inland there are many interesting trails where you can enjoy scenes of beautiful rolling countryside and encounter many of Dorset’s picturesque villages.  Some of the major trails and routes are below:

  • East Dorset – Stour Valley Way, Wareham Forest Way, Purbeck Way
  • North Dorset – Wessex Ridgeway, North Dorset Trailway
  • West Dorset – South Dorset Ridgeway, Cerne Valley Way, South West Coast Path
