Beaches in Dorset

Blue Flag beaches, watersports and the Jurassic Coast

Dorset has wonderful selection of beaches from the family friendly blue flag beaches in Bournemouth to the fossil rich Chesil beach.  You will never be too far away from enjoying these beaches and the beautiful coast line from your holiday cottage in Dorset.

Christchurch

There are a number of sandy beaches in the Christchurch area including Friars Beach, Highcliffe Beach and Avon Beach.  The beaches are family friendly and are predominately sandy.   The beaches are often lined with beach  huts and have basic amenities and often cafes and shops.  Mudeford Sandbank is accessible from Avon beach and all the beaches provides wonderful views of Christchurch Harbour.

Bournemouth & Poole

The coastline between Bournemouth and Poole has seven miles of excellent beaches including the National Trust beach at Studland and the Blue flag beach at Sandbanks.  In total this area boasts 7 blue flag beaches. The sheltered beach at Bournemouth offers excellent views of the Isle of Wight and also offers an articial reef just off the coast providing surfers with year round waves whatever the weather.  Many of the beaches in this area are excellent for families as they are sandy and gently slope into the water.  The facilities for watersports are excellent in this area.

Swanage

Swanage has an excellent and safe sandy beach and is a blue flag awarded beach.  The beach is surrounded by this Victorian resort which offers a number of traditional seaside attractions and a beautiful pier.

Durdle Door & Man o’ War Bay

Durdle Door and the nearby Man o’ War Bay offer one of the most spectacular views as you approach the beaches from the coastline.  The path to the beaches can be a little tricky but you are rewarded with some of the most stunning coastline scenery in the UK.  There are some facilities in the area including a cafe but it is the natural beauty of these beaches that are the attraction.

Ringstead

Ringstead bay is one of the lesser known beaches on the Dorset coast and as such this lovely beach tends to be one of the least busy, in particular in the summer months.  The beach is a mix of sand and shingle and provides great swimming and views over towards Weymouth and Portland.

Weymouth

Weymouth offers a stunning, gently sloping sandy and safe beach.  It is a very popular family beach with a multitude of attractions along the waterfront promenade, including a funfair and a host of cafes and restaurants.  There is also a number of traditional beach activities including donkey rides, pedalos, punch & judy and trampolines.

Hive Beach

Hive Beach is a shingle beach situated on the beautiful Jurassic Coast near Burton Bradstock.  Although very popular the large beach is never over crowded  and is a great place to spend the day.  On the beach is probably one of the best beach cafes on the South Coast – the Hive Beach Cafe has received rave reviews including from the Sunday Times and has a year round excellent seafood menu as well as a great ice cream parlour.

West Bay

West Bay is located just south of the market town of Bridport and has a picturesque harbour and modern pier which affords amazing views along the Jurassic Coastline towards Weymouth and Lyme Regis.  There are a number of coastline walks which are easily accessible and around the harbour are a number stalls offering some of the freshest fish and chips you will find.

Charmouth

Charmouth offers a large beach and is part of the Jurassic Coast.  It is most famed for its fossil hunting and is probably one of the best places to find fossils in the UK.  At the beach the Heritage Coast Centre runs guided fossil walks, workshops and information on fossil hunting and the Jurassic Coast formation.

Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis offers history and a beautiful and safe sandy beach.  The beach has a pretty promenade filled with cafes and restaurants so you can sit back and relax watching the world go by.  The far end of the beach boasts the famous Cobb which has featured in several films.  Above the beach are beautiful gardens and is home to the new Mark Hix fish restaurant.  The high street is only yards from the beach and offers an interesting array of shops and cafes.
